Microsoft and Coursera Launch 11 New Professional Certificates in AI, Data, and Software Development
Bridging the Skills Gap in a Rapidly Changing Job Market
The pace of technological change is outpacing traditional education, creating a growing divide between emerging innovations and the skills workers need to apply them. To address this, Microsoft and Coursera have expanded their partnership with the introduction of 11 new Professional Certificates focused on artificial intelligence, data, and software development. These programs aim to provide learners with hands-on, job-ready capabilities that align directly with the fastest-growing roles in today’s economy.

A Significant Expansion of the Microsoft Professional Certificate Portfolio
This launch increases the Microsoft Professional Certificate catalog on Coursera by more than 50%. The existing portfolio has already attracted over 1.3 million enrollments worldwide, demonstrating strong demand for structured, accessible learning paths. The new certificates cover critical domains where skill shortages are most acute, from generative AI to modern data systems and software engineering.
According to Elisa Graceffo, General Manager of Global Skilling at Microsoft, “We’re moving into a world where every role is shaped by AI, data, and cloud technologies. These certificates are designed to help learners understand new tools, confidently apply them in their daily work, and stay ahead in today’s rapidly changing job market.”
Growing Demand for AI, Data, and Development Skills
The urgency for upskilling is underscored by data from Coursera’s Job Skills Report 2026. Enrollments in generative AI content have surged 234% year over year, while Professional Certificate enrollments climbed 91%. These figures reflect a broader trend: learners are not just seeking knowledge—they want verified, practical skills that can be immediately applied in real-world contexts.
Overview of the 11 New Certificates
The new offerings are organized into three key domains where demand consistently outstrips supply. Each certificate emphasizes hands-on practice with real tools and direct career applicability.
Artificial Intelligence & Generative AI
Five certificates focus on AI and generative AI, preparing learners to design, deploy, and manage intelligent systems:
- Microsoft AI Agents: From Foundations to Applications – Learn to build and deploy AI agents for diverse use cases.
- Microsoft Account Manager with Generative AI – Apply GenAI to account planning, customer insights, and relationship management.
- Microsoft Azure AI in Healthcare – An entry-level certificate for developing responsible AI solutions in healthcare.
- Microsoft Generative AI Engineering – Build, evaluate, and deploy GenAI systems using Azure and modern frameworks.
- Microsoft Sales Toolkit with Generative AI – Enhance prospecting, forecasting, and sales execution with AI tools.
Software Development
Three certificates target foundational and intermediate programming skills:

- Microsoft Beginners Guide to C# Fundamentals – An entry-level path to writing structured, object-oriented code for modern applications.
- Microsoft Getting Started with ASP.NET Core – Learn to create dynamic websites and web apps with secure back-end systems.
- Microsoft Introduction to C++ Programming – Build core programming skills for performance-intensive software.
Data
The remaining three certificates (not individually named in the original announcement) focus on data skills such as data analysis, database management, and cloud-based data solutions. These complete the portfolio to round out the 11 new certificates across the three domains.
Structured Pathways for the Future of Work
With these additions, Microsoft and Coursera continue to offer scalable, verified learning paths that help workers pivot into high-demand roles. By combining foundational knowledge with applied, hands-on projects, the certificates aim to produce job-ready graduates who can contribute immediately in AI, data, and development fields. For anyone looking to stay competitive in an evolving labor market, these programs provide a direct route to building in-demand skills.
